Nuggets beat writers battle to see who's more fleet afoot
Usain Bolt? Moves like a slug.
Ty Lawson? Runs in mud.
Aaron Lopez and Benjamin Hochman?
Now there’s a double dose of fleet feet.
Back on Jan. 13, Hochman – the indomitable Nuggets beat writer for the Denver Post – sprinted down the hallway in dogged pursuit of an interview with Carmelo Anthony.
His impressive dash was aired on Altitude Sports & Entertainment, prompting a discussion among those who cover the Nuggets on a regular basis.
The competitive juices started flowing and ultimately led to the question: Who’s the fastest beat writer in Denver?
While I was impressed with Hochman’s speed on film, I still thought he looked like a man running in a headwind. No way he could beat me.
Hochman, of course, started in with the trash talk, calling me Slow-Pez and boasting that his 40 time was pi (3.14).
There was only one way to settle the argument: The Big Race.
We couldn’t find Mr. Bevilacqua, the gym teacher of Seinfeld fame, so we enlisted Nuggets strength-and-conditioning coach Steve Hess to serve as the starter.
Hess has worked with elite athletes around the world, so we knew he would push us to our limit (which, needless to say, wouldn’t take much).
First one back to the baseline wins.
After some more trash talk, we lined up on the hardwood and bolted down the court at Steve’s command.
I have no doubt that both Hochman and I left some tread marks on the practice court with our blazing speed. The guy is built like Barney Rubble, but he can really move.
The showdown was captured on film and posted on Nuggets.com, leaving no doubt about the fastest man on the Nuggets beat.
At the risk of spoiling the ending, let’s just say that one of us should have saved his breath.
And like all good rivalries, I’m sure there will be a rematch.
